Initialize level-set interface during simulation?

I am trying to model a single line scan of a laser over a bed of powdered metal. So far I have the heat transfer down. I would like to model the formation of the metal bead and the heat transfer all in one model. I am hoping to use the level set method to track the interface of the molten metal and surrounding atmosphere as the scan is taking place.

I am currently working out using the previous solution operator to change the properties of non-melted elements in a plane as the laser passes to the properties of the surrounding atmosphere. Providing I can do this, I need to make comsol recognize the boundary between the new atmosphere and the molten metal as the level set interface. Can anyone tell me if this sounds possible?

From the beginning I felt I may need to do 2 separate models, but I would like to do everything in 1 if it is possible. Do you think I am wasting my time to pursuit a model this complicated? Or is there an easier way that I am missing?
