Intensive introduction to modeling electrochemical reactions in COMSOL Multiphysics®

This training course introduces the capabilities of the Electrochemistry Module and Electrodeposition Module, add-ons to the COMSOL Multiphysics® simulation platform. During the 3-day online training course, we will show you how to use these two modules to model electrochemical reactions and analyze the important characteristics of your electrodeposition cells. We will show how to describe in detail the potential in electrodes, electrolytes, and electrode kinetics as well as how to combine multiple electrode reactions in one electrode. Furthermore, we will investigate the effects that chemical species transport has on electrochemical reaction kinetics.

During the training exercises, you will learn how to account for ohmic, activation, and concentration overpotential and define chemical and electrochemical reactions in COMSOL Multiphysics®. You will also see how simulation can help predict the effects that electrode geometry, material properties, and operating conditions have on the performance of electrochemical cells. In addition, we will give an overview of the dedicated electrochemistry features that are available for simulating amperometry, potentiometry, and other electroanalytical techniques. We will also explore porous electrodes, as well as the processes of electrode deposition and dissolution. Using the Electrodeposition Module, we will show how to simulate the impact of geometric changes on electrochemical processes, model moving boundaries, and predict the thickness of deposited layers.

Training Course Objective

We will use a combination of instructive and self-guided hands-on training together with theoretical and practical lectures. The goal is to immerse you in the COMSOL Multiphysics® modeling workflow and help you feel comfortable working with the Electrochemistry Module and the Electrodeposition Module. By the end of the training course, you will know how to efficiently model electrochemistry and electrodeposition with the COMSOL® software.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Charge transport
  • Electrode kinetics
  • Mass transport in liquids and convective flow
  • Current distributions

2 p.m.–4 p.m. EDT

  • Chemical and electrochemical reactions
  • Electroanalytical techniques
  • Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)
  • Solving electrochemical models

Day 2

Work on exercises (no class)

Day3

11 a.m.–1 p.m. EST

The third day begins with a focus on different modeling scales for porous electrodes and then shifts to understanding certain features in the Electrodeposition Module, including the modeling of electrode dissolution and deposition as well as deformed geometries.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Porous electrodes
  • Homogenizing of porous electrodes
  • Electrode dissolution or deposition

2 p.m.–4 p.m. EST

  • Deformed geometry
  • Parameter estimation
