Thick Plate Stress Analysis

A benchmark model where a thick plate exposed to pressure on the top surface is analyzed. The solution is compared with a NAFEMS benchmark solution.

Thermal Actuator

This tutorial model of a two-hot-arm thermal actuator couples three different physics phenomena: electric current conduction, heat conduction with heat generation, and structural stresses and strains due to thermal expansion. In this model version, the geometry is parameterized so that the effect of varying the actuator's dimensions can be analyzed.

Instability of a Space Arc Frame

This model illustrates the instability of a space arc frame under concentrated vertical loading. A small lateral load is applied to break the symmetry of the structure. Members in the frame are modeled using geometrically nonlinear beam elements. The results are compared with available literature data.

Pressure Sensor Moisture Absorption

For their integration in microelectronic circuits, MEMS devices are bonded on printed circuit boards and connected with other devices. Then, the whole circuit is often covered with an epoxy mold compound (EMC) to protect the devices and their interconnects with the board. The epoxy polymers used for such applications are subject to moisture absorption and hygroscopic swelling, which can lead to ...

Large Deformation Analysis of a Beam

This example studies the deflection of a cantilever beam undergoing very large deflections. In addition, a linearized buckling analysis of the structure is also performed. The model comes from Section 5.2 of NAFEMS Background to Finite Element Analysis of Geometric Non-linearity Benchmarks.

Piezoelectric Shear-Actuated Beam

The model performs a static analysis on a piezoelectric actuator based on the movement of a cantilever beam, using the Piezoelectric Devices predefined multiphysics interface. Inspired by work done by V. Piefort and A. Benjeddou, it models a sandwich beam using the shear mode of the piezoelectric material to deflect the tip.

Shift into gear

This model demonstrates the ability to simulate Multibody Dynamics in COMSOL. It comprises a multilink mechanism that is used in an antique automobile as a gearshift lever. It was created out of curiosity to find out how large forces are on the individual components. The model uses flexible parts, i.e. the Structural Mechanics Module was used along with the Multibody Dynamics Module.

Prestressed Bolts in a Tube Connection

A tube connection consisting of a flange with four pre-stressed bolts is subjected to tensile forces. Two contact regions are modeled: one between the bottom surface of the flange and the top surface of an additional fixed solid, and the other between the washer under the bolt head and the flange. In order to compute the influence of the tensile force on the stress level in the bolt, a ...

Acoustic-Structure Interaction

Liquid or gas acoustics coupled to structural objects such as membranes, plates or solids are important applications in many engineering fields. This model is a general demonstration of an acoustic fluid phenomenon in 3D that is coupled to a solid object. The walls of the solid object are impacted by the acoustic pressure. The frequency response from the solid is calculated, which is then fed ...

Fluid-Structure Interaction in Aluminum Extrusion

In massive forming processes like rolling or extrusion, metal alloys are deformed in a hot solid state with material flowing under ideally plastic conditions. Such processes can be simulated effectively using computational fluid dynamics, where the material is considered as a fluid with a very high viscosity that depends on velocity and temperature. Internal friction of the moving material acts ...
