Parameterized Concrete Beam

The concrete beam application allows the user to calculate the stress and deformation of his own concrete beam. Many inputs can be edited, like loads and boundary conditions, beam dimensions, distribution of reinforcement bars, and material properties of concrete and bars. Results show axial stress in concrete and beams, displacement and regions where plasticity occurs.

Corrosion Protection of Multiple Oil Platforms

This example extends the corrosion protection system analysis of the single oil platform example by modeling the influence of multiple oil platforms placed in an array. The use of the Current Distribution on Edges, BEM interface significantly reduces the problem size and computational time by modeling all electrodes as cylinders along the edges of a wireframe geometry.

Capacitively Coupled Plasma

This application provides insight into the instantaneous and periodic steady state solutions of a 1D capacitively coupled plasma. The geometry, pressure and applied voltage are all inputs, as is the frequency and number of RF cycles over which to solve. Aside from instantaneous and time averaged plots, global quantities for the power deposition and current are computed.

Carbon Dioxide Corrosion in Steel Pipes

Carbon dioxide in aqueous solution is highly corrosive and can cause significant damage to steel designs. Such conditions arise in pipes used in a variety of applications, especially within the petrochemical industry. In this tutorial example, turbulent flows consisting of carbon dioxide and water corrode the steel surface of pipes. The corrosion is influenced by the temperature and pH. This ...

Anode Film Resistance Effect on Cathodic Protection - new

This model exemplifies how the rate of steel corrosion in an oil platform increases over time due to build-up of a resistive film on the sacrificial anodes, formed by reaction products. The model also includes secondary current distribution electrode kinetics on the protected steel structure, defining simultaneous metal dissolution and oxygen reduction (mixed potential).

1D Lithium-Ion Battery Drive-Cycle Monitoring

This application shows how a battery cell exposed to a hybrid electric vehicle drive cycle can be investigated with the Lithium-Ion Battery interface in COMSOL. In the figure, an example of an electric vehicle with three critical components of a simplified battery management system is displayed. When the vehicle runs according to a specific drive cycle, the temperature and voltage of the battery ...

Fast Numerical Modeling of a Conical Horn Lens Antenna

An axisymmetric 3D structure such as a conical horn antenna can be simulated in a fast and efficient way using only its 2D layout. In this model, the antenna radiation and matching characteristics are computed very quickly with respect to the dominant TE mode from the given circular waveguide by simulating the 2D axisymmetric geometry of an 3D antenna structure.

Lorenz Attractor - new

A Lorenz attractor can be described by a system of ordinary differential equations: the Lorenz system. In the early 1960s, Lorenz discovered the chaotic behavior of this system for certain parameter values and initial conditions. The solution, when plotted as a phase space, resembles the figure eight. This example uses the Dormand-Prince explicit method for solving the ODEs and a Point ...

Ultra-high Vacuum, Chemical Vapor Deposition

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a process often used in the Semiconductor industry to grow layers of high-purity solid material on top of a wafer substrate. CVD is achieved using many different techniques and across a range of pressures from atmospheric, to ultrahigh vacuum (UHV/CVD). UHV/CVD is performed at pressures below 10-6 Pa (10-8 Torr), so gas transport is achieved by molecular flow ...

1D Isothermal Lithium-Air Battery

Rechargeable lithium-air batteries have recently attracted great interest mainly due to their high energy density. The theoretical value is about 11400 Wh/kg which is around 10 times greater than the lithium-ion batteries. In this tutorial, discharge of a lithium-air battery is simulated using the *Lithium-ion Battery* interface. The transport of oxygen (from external air) in the porous carbon ...
