varying density with depth

Hello,
my friend and I wish to make a model that has material density dependent on distance from an upper boundary. Does anyone know how to write an equation that would vary density with distance from a boundary?

thanks,
Sam

define a function of two arguments that will have desired density values vs. spatial coordinates x,y. Then use this function in material properties.
