We start at an introductory level, then lead the student through topics needed in all analyses (interactive meshing techniques, choosing solvers, etc) and then into advanced topics (coupling variables, adding and modifying equations) using lecture, worked examples and workshop problems. The goal is to immerse the student in all of the main aspects of using COMSOL so that he or she can feel comfortable with most of the commands accessible from the user interface and confident that they can be productive solving simulation problems with COMSOL.

Day 2, 09:00-17:00

By considering a variety of models we will bring out points to help you get the most out of each step in the process.
In particular we will consider...

  • Solvers available and options
  • Advanced geometry modeling
  • Controlling the degrees of freedom
  • Advanced and interactive meshing
  • Standard and advanced post-processing options
  • Using external functions in the material parameters
  • Non-local coupling variables (extended multiphysics)

According to the length of the course and the interests of the participants, some or all of the above will be considered.


Dr. Valentina Troncale
COMSOL Multiphysics GmbH, Zürich

Valentina Troncale obtained her MSc degree in Physics form the Università degli Studi di Milano, focusing on Condensed Matter Physics. After joining CERN, where she worked on the optimization of ISOL Ion Beam genreration, she obtained her PhD degree from EPFL (Laboratory of Physics of Nanostructures) with a Thesis on optical properties of semiconductor quantum-dots. After a collaboration with the Applied Mathematics Institute at the University of Lausanne, she joined the Nanoelectronics Group at the IBM Research Labs in Zürich, where she developed semiconductor nanowire-based devices for heat transfer and thermoelectrics. Valentina is part of the COMSOL Multiphysics Team in Zürich since June 2013.

Dr. Sven Friedel
COMSOL Multiphysics GmbH, Zurich

Dr. Sven Friedel is a physicist and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Leipzig (Germany) in geophysics, specializing in electromagnetic inverse problems applied to tomographic imaging. He also taught courses in, among other things, geomagnetics. For his research he focused on the simulation of electrical, fluidic, and thermal processes in volcanoes. After several years working as a postdoctoral researcher in the area of geotechnical engineering at the ETH in Zurich, in 2004 Dr. Friedel established COMSOL AB's branch office in Switzerland.

Zoran Vidakovic
COMSOL Multiphysics GmbH, Zürich

Zoran Vidakovic received his BSc and MSc degrees in mechanical engineering from ETH Zürich, Switzerland. His studies and research projects focused on turbomachinery, heat transfer, fluid-
and thermodynamics and advanced energy technologies in general. In his master thesis at the Laboratory for Energy Conversion he numerically investigated the turbine performance and heat transfer of innovative cycle concepts for CO2 capture ready fossil power plants. Before joining COMSOL in April 2010 Mr. Vidakovic completed a six month industrial internship in the Aero-/ Thermodynamics R&D department of MAN Turbo AG Schweiz.

Suggested Background

This course is suitable for anyone interested in using COMSOL Multiphysics for the mathematical modeling of physics phenomena such as heat transfer, transport phenomena, fluid dynamics, electromagnetics, photonics, structural mechanics, and acoustics. No previous experience with COMSOL Multiphysics is required.

Cancellation/Return policies

Instructor-led training tuition is fully refundable if we receive written notification (via mail or e-mail) of cancellation on or before 14 business days prior to the class. Cancellations made less than 14 business days prior to class will be charged 25% of the fee. If you fail to show up to class without written notice, you will be charged the full tuition. You may send a substitute in your place to avoid a fee. If a training course cannot take place as scheduled due to circumstances beyond COMSOL's control, we will issue a full refund for the amount that you have already paid.
